A woman sets off to work a plot of land where she is growing vegetables. In the run up to independence the Soviet collective farming system collapsed which, when combined with runaway inflation, caused severe food shortages for the majority of people who were unable to afford to buy food in private markets. This prompted a return to working on the land, even amongst those who lived in cities, such as this woman who lived in a huge housing scheme in north-eastern Kiev which accomodated 400, 000 people.
