Baiona, Galicia, Spain

A young girl looks on as percebes (Goose barnacles) collectors arrange their harvest before the daily auction in the Baiona fish market. Percebes, a luxury seafood item, grow on rocks along the storm battered northern Spanish coast. The dangerous business of harvesting them for sale generates millons of Euros each year in Spain, providing a livelihood for many families. Although tightly regulated due to the economic crisis many people have been attracted to illegally poaching the crustaceans creating an unsustainable strain on the natural resource.
