Dandi is famous as the place where Gandhi made salt at the end of the 240-mile Salt March from Ahmedabad, protesting against taxes imposed by the British. When Gandhi was jailed for making his own salt from seawater it drew worldwide attention to the Indian independence movement and sparked large-scale dissent in India, leading to the imprisonment of over 80,000 Indian protestors.
