Afghan refugee Azizullah, 8, boils water on an open fire at the squalid former barracks on the outskirts of Belgrade where a large number of migrants and refugees have taken shelter from the freezing winter weather. They are all hoping to enter the EU but have been held up in their journey by the closure of the nearby Hungarian border. Azizullah had travelled with his father but he was arrested and taken into custody when he triied to cross into the Czech Republic. The boy is now being looked after by fellow refugees. The fires they burn, as temperatures fall to minus 20 Celsius, are fuelled with old railway sleepers. However, the wood is impregnated with chemicals which are released when they are burned resulting in the air being thick with toxic smoke.
