Kikele, Donga Province, Benin

Afsatou Irokou Worou at her cooking fires in the village of Kikele. This homestead happens to belong to a forest guard who protects a small 13.4ha sacred forest on the edge of the village that is home to a troop of critically-endangered white-thighed colobus monkeys, and from which no wood may be taken. The situation is illustrative of the reality that over 90 percent of the nation's households are dependent on wood or charcoal for cooking. Together with one of the world's highest population growth rates and corresponding demand for agricultural land, this results in an alarming rate of forest loss.
