North, SRI LANKA

After thirteen years in a refugee camp, Nagamuttu, his wife Sivpakkiam and their family have returned to their home near Palai, finding the building destroyed and half of their fields mined. Nagamuttus blind mother rests in a makeshift shelter built next to the ruins of the ancestral home. After decades of civil war, a ceasefire agreement was signed between the government and the Tamil Tiger rebels in February 2002. Despite the devastation wrought on the infrastructure of the country, and the remaining unexploded ordnance (UXO), thousands of people have begun returning to their homes.
