Beni, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo

Alexis Kambale wearing a photograph of his sister Elodie Kitsama (19) on a lanyard around his neck during a family gathering at the mortuary to view her body after she died from ebola the previous day. Elodie, who was still at school, died after four days at the centre. The practicing of 'safe funerals' means only trained health workers, wearing protective clothing, can handle corpses of ebola victims. Although essential to stop the spread of ebola it is resented by many because it is traditional to hug and kiss the dead in DRC.
