American Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula), FMNH no. 98248. Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago. Conservation status: vulnerable. An overall reduction in population of at least 30% may occur within the next 10 years due to increased legal and illegal harvest of caviar and the effects of introduced species, pollution, competitors or parasites. Dams and reservoirs along Texas rivers decreases water flow and interrupts spawning. Although paddlefish are widespread, the IUCN vulnerable classification is recommended.
