An aerial view of the construction of the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu River. More than 80% of the river's waters has been diverted from its natural course, making it one of the biggest man-made interventions. About 100 km of the river bed, a stretch known as Volta Grande do Xingu, is being subjected to a drastic reduction in its flow which will have incalculable impacts on both the aquatic fauna and the way of life of traditional populations, that depend on the river for their food and transportation.
