An aerial view of the construction site of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD, also called the Hidase Dam) is a gravity dam on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia. Upon completion the dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa with a capacity to generate 6,000 MW. The dam remains controversial and Egypt, further downstream the Nile, is calling on Ethiopia to cease construction and to negotiate about the water resources first. The $ 4 billion project is supposed to be finished by mid-2017.
