Mato Grosso, Brazil

An area degraded by gold mining, located on the banks of the Peixoto de Azevedo River in northern Mato Grosso. This region that was once covered by the Amazon rain forest but has been cleared to make way for gold mining, pasture for livestock and soybean plantations.
There is a planned law to liberate mineral exploitation in indigenous lands that has the support of President Jair Bolsonaro. If this happens, such apocalyptic landscapes will also become the reality within the indigenous lands, which are the most preserved areas of the Amazon rainforest.
