Anna Kravchyshyn at her house in the Carpathian Mountains, formerly a safe house for the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Formed in 1942 they fought a guerrilla war against the Nazis, and then the Soviet forces who occupied Ukraine at the end of the Second World War. Living in the forest by day they would visit their supporters, such as Anna who worked for them as a courier, at night to collect supplies and exchange information. UPA survived until the early 1950s carrying out raids on Soviet installations and personnel.
