Studenica, KOSOVO

Avni Gorqaj, the new village hodji (Muslim holy man), atop the badly damaged minaret of the mosque, which was hit by two missiles during the 1999 war. The whole population of the ethnic Albanian village of Studenica were forced to flee the fighting, and 23 of the villagers were killed, including the hodji. Although he was still a student and aged only 19, Avni became the hodji, and travelled back to the village every Friday to take the prayers.
George Georgiou photographed Avni Gorqaj again six years later (image GGE00566KOS).
