Boys use a laptop in the Hotel Dartlo. Though the hotel has no internet connection, owner Marika Otiuridze says she is feeling pressure to go online as guests are asking about WiFi now that one other hotel in the village is now online. She says she plans to have a connection installed for next summer's tourist season.
Connectivity is possible thanks to a group of volunteers who hauled masts and equipment up several of Tusheti's peaks in four-wheel drives and on horseback in the summer of 2017 to build a solar-powered network that beams WiFi signals across the region. One of the network's aims is to make it easier for local tourism business operators to reach and interact with their clients, as well as to offer convenience to visitors.
