Butembo where an Ebola outbreak was declared on 7 February 2021 less than a year after a previous Ebola outbreak was declared over in June 2020. It had claimed the lives of 2,287 people since August 2018.
The second outbreak appeared to be under control, partly as a result of the swift deployment of the Ebola vaccine, although there is still resistance to being inoculated in some areas.
