A woman at the Hawassa University weighs and measures pulses grown, in conjunction with farmers, in an experimental field treated with zinc fertilisers to determine the optimum quantities required to improve growing rates and protein content for chickpeas and other pulse varieties. Pulses, such as chickpeas, lentils, and faba beans, are an important cash crop and source of protein. However, varieties currently grown in Ethiopia typically provide low yields, contain inadequate levels of protein and have limited capacity to improve the soil.
