Charly claimed asylum in the UK after fleeing from Cameroon in February 2006, where she had supported the Southern Cameroon National Council (SCNC), a group outlawed by the Cameroonian government. She was detained many times and suffered severe beatings because of her SCNC acitivites. Following the rejection of her asylum claim she spent several weeks in detention at the beginning of 2008 with the baby she has with a new partner. They were released in March 2008 and since then they have been destitute. Charly is one of an estimated 300,000 rejected asylum seekers living in the UK.
