Children are silhouetted against the evening sky while below a permanent fire rages underground, fuelled by coal seams and seemingly impossible to extinguish. The ground temperature is sometimes too hot to walk on and methane and sulphur escape through cracks, polluting the surrounding air. People who live in nearby villages are too poor to move and make a living by illegal mining and scavenging of coal from huge open cast coal mines on their doorstep.
