Concrete artificial bird houses in a corn field. Malaysia is the world's second biggest exporter of birds nests, with 95 percent of the nests being sold to China. The industry is worth 1.5 billion USD. Bird's nest soup is a Chinese delicacy dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618 CE - 907 CE) when only royalty could afford it. Believed to have medicinal properties, these nests were traditionally collected from cliff-side caverns. Today, the nests are often commercially farmed usingpurpose-built structures with 'tweeters' that play recordings of bird calls to attract swiftlets.
