Deepak Nanaji Parati laughs while talking with some neighbours after a day of work at his organic farm. For three years he used chemical agriculture, mainly GM cotton and soybean, but when he saw that production was lower and expenses higher than his traditional crops, he stopped and returned to the traditional seeds and organic farming. Currently he has 100 different kinds of traditional crops, all from local seeds, and without the use of any pesticides. He comments that Bt cotton requires a lot of chemicals and a lot of water, making it very costly. He says that farmers around him using Bt cotton are having lots of problems including higher pest infection and as their crops are not working well and the costs are very high, he believes that many will end up in debt and that some may even end up killing themselves. Like him, some of his neighbours have recently decided to move to organic agriculture.
