During the run-up to Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991 portraits of Lenin still hung above the blackboards in the classrooms of the village school in Barushkovtsi, near Zhytomyr in western Ukraine. While political change happened quickly in the cities of western Ukraine, it was much slower in the countyside and in the eastern part of the country.
