Earless Monitor Lizard (Lanthanotus borneensis). Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago. FMNH catalogue no. 130981. Known only from the state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. It is nocturnal, lives underground and is rarely observed, so little is known of its habits and life cycle. The species is very rare in collections and has been referred to as a 'holy grail' in herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles). This is a cleared and stained specimen is stored in glycerine. The soft tissue has been taken away in a process that leaves only bone and cartilage, which are then stained red (bone) and blue (cartilage).
