Elvie Ingoli, president of the German Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia Association, points to a photograph of herself as a child, taken while she was in isolation after receiving a stem cell transplant that cured her of sickle cell disease. Treated in Belgium, Ingoli says she was the first German sickle cell disease patient to receive such a transplant. Though the procedure was successful, it later led to complications including bone cancer.
