Exhausted worshippers take a nap along the route of the Mazu pilgrimage as they await the arrival of the palanquin bearing an ancient statue of goddess Mazu which has been carried from the start point at the Taoist (Daoism) Gongtian Temple on a 200km journey south. Many people will walk the entire route which takes about four to five days. The temple has hosted the annual pilgrimage for the last 110 years but in 2020, the procession was banned, due to COVID-19 restrictions. In 2021 the event is back on and is predicted to attract more participants than ever.
