Farmer Ruivaldo Nery repairs the motor of his canoe (rabeta), the only means of transport used to travel through this permanently flooded area in the Pantanal of Paiaguas, where his farm is located. This flooding occurred due to the 'breaking in' of the river Taquari, which, due to silting up, abandoned its original course and spread its waters over thousands of hectares, flooding farms and communities, and making life in the region unviable.
