Bartella, Nineveh Governorate, Iraq

Father Banham Lalo stands in the side entrance to the new Mar Goris Syriac-Catholic church (St George) which has been rebuilt following its destruction by Islamic State during their occupation of the town.

Prior to being overrun by ISIS in August 2014 the town was majority Christian but following its liberation, on 20 October 2016 by Iraqi Special Operations Forces, the Christian population has seen a marked decrease and it now amounts to about a sixth of the town's population which now has a Shiite Muslim majority.
