Foibe Akelo holds the radio she took with her when she fled from the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army). Her 18 year old daughter, Josephine, on her left, was abducted for 13 months by the LRA. She was raped by an LRA commander and is now pregnant. It is suspected that the rapist was HIV positive. For 18 years the LRA rebels have terrorised the Northern provinces of Uganda abducting 20,000 children and forcing 1.6 million people to flee their homes. According to Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) the mortality rate among children in some areas is five times the rate internationally agreed to constitute an 'emergency out of control'. The UN's under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs has called Northern Uganda the "largest neglected humanitarian emergency in the world".
