Thousands of migrants attempted to cross into Europe along the Poland Belarus border in the autumn of 2021. By the last week of October six migrants had died stuck between the two countries. Poland, backed by the European Union, is on the frontline of what is perceived to be a campaign by Belarus to encourage illegal migration as an attack on the EU and as a retaliation for sanctions imposed after the crackdown on anti government protests in 2020 and early 2021.
