French diplomats in discussion at the Conference on Disarmament. The French Ambassador Jean-Hugues Simon-Michel at left, made a statement to the conference stressing the importance of negotiation on fissile material above all else, and laying out matters for debate: what constitutes a definition of fissile material; what type of uranium or plutonium should be included; what processes leading to their production should be included; the process of verification, and its cost etc.
The Conference on Disarmament, established in 1979, is the only forum for nations to discuss multilateral arms control and disarmament issues. It has a primary focus nuclear weapons control and disarmament. 65 countries, and 38 observer nations, convene annually at the United Nations' Palais des Nations building for three sessions of talks totalling 24 weeks.
