According to ancient Luo customs, a widow is obliged to have sex with a specialised ‘cleanser' to be purified. She is then inherited as a wife by her brother in law (Joseph, on the right here). The consequence of the ritual is that AIDS has taken on epidemic proportions in the tribe.
