Funeral preparations in the Luo community. The wooden construction is a symbolic home built at the birthplace of Jarred Apamo, who has died of AIDS. The man in the background wearing the cap has been selected to cleanse' his widow, Dorcas. According to ancient Luo customs, a widow is obliged to have sex with a specialised cleanser' to be purified. She is then inherited as a wife by her brother in law. The consequence of the ritual is that AIDS has taken on epidemic proportions in the tribe.
