North, SRI LANKA

Girl on the beach at Vaddermarachi East. People have recently begun returning to the rebel-held part of the Jaffna peninsula. This area was heavily fought over and there are scores of landmines laid to protect former government positions. After decades of civil war, a ceasefire agreement was signed between the government and the Tamil Tiger rebels in February 2002. Despite the devastation wrought on the infrastructure of the country, and the remaining unexploded ordnance (UXO), thousands of people have begun returning to their homes.
