Hadi Ghaemi was born in Shiraz, Iran. As a youth he lived through the extraordinary times of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the subsequent reign of terror in the early 1980s. In 1983 he moved to the United States to complete his education, becoming a professor of physics at City University of New York. His groundbreaking research in nanophysics has been published in prestigious scientific journals such as Nature, and he holds four patents in this field. In 2000 he decided to dedicate himself to the defense of human rights, becoming a leading global voice for human rights in Iran. He currently leads the Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, which he founded in 2008. Due to his human rights advocacy he is not able to travel back to Iran.
