Hamid is now on support from section 4 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 after repeated suicide attempts and this is the door to his room at the no choice accommodation he has been given. He spent three years living on buses, in parks and on the streets of London, after being tortured in prison for over a year in his homeland. Hamid's father ran a large and successful building and car business in Iran, the family was wealthy and after leaving school he worked for his father. He became involved in a political movement that opposed the government and as a result was detained and tortured. Hamid's brother was hanged due to his anti-government political activity. Hamid however managed to escape to the UK, and after his asylum claim was refused he became destitute and started sleeping rough. Hamid is one of an estimated 300,000 rejected asylum seekers living in the UK.
