Butembo, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo

Hygienist Bertrand Karumba (33) wearing full personal protective equipment as he prepares to enter the Ebola treatment centre's treatment area.

An Ebola outbreak was declared on 7 February 2021 in Butembo less than a year after a previous Ebola outbreak was declared over in June 2020. It had claimed the lives of 2,287 people since August 2018.

The second outbreak appeared to be under control, partly as a result of the swift deployment of the Ebola vaccine, although there is still resistance to being inoculated in some areas.
