In the Drakensberg mountains, near Loskop, Lihle Mbele holds her favourite photo of her mother Joyce, which shows her holding Lihle as a baby. Since Joyce's death from an Aids related illness, Lihle, the eldest of three, is now responsible not just for her siblings, but for her cousins and aunt, who is ill with Aids and TB. Child-headed households such as this are becoming more common in South Africa, as the Aids epidemic continues to ravage the country.
