James Muir hurries across a street in the centre of Glasgow hoping to find one of the local dealers after making enough money begging to buy two bags of heroin. In a plastic bag James is carrying clean 'tools', syringes, sterile water, citric acid and a medical spoon which are given out by chemists and homeless charities in Scotland to ensure addicts don't reuse or share dirty needles. Much of his time when not begging on the streets is spent looking for dealers and waiting around, using his drugs and then repeating the cycle. Statistics released in July 2019 show that Scotland's drug related deaths are three times higher than the rest of the United Kingdom as a whole and the highest in Europe.
