Kaing Guek Eav, alias Comrade Duch, the first Khmer Rouge leader in court charged with crimes against humanity. He was commandant of Pol Pot's most secret prison S-21 where an estimated 20,000 people were tortured and later murdered druing the Khmer Rouge period. His pre-trial hearing was held in the Extraorindary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), a UN backed tribunal charged with bringing the surviving Khmer Leaders to trial for their part in the killing of 1.7 million people in the 1970s.
