Lope National Park, Gabon

Lee White, former botanist and now Gabon's Minister for the Environment, stands next to an Okoume tree. The okoume tree (aucoumea klaineana) is a popular source of plywood due to its lightness and flexibility.
Gabon is looking to refocus its national economy to sustainable forestry due to declining oil reserves. The Congo Basin rain forest covers 90% of the country and is known as the 'lungs of Africa'.
