Lihle Mbele (centre) watches her mother Joyce's funeral in the Drakensberg mountains near Loskop. Children are often left out both physically and emotionally from family funerals, and are left alone by adults to cope with the trauma of a parent's death. Lihle is now head of the household, responsible for her two brothers, four cousins and her aunt who is too weak from Aids and TB to look after her own children. Child-headed households such as this are becoming more common in South Africa, as the Aids epidemic continues to ravage the country.
