Semey (formerly Semipalatinsk), Kazakhstan

Local residents fish in Lake Chagan or 'Atomic Lake', a crater lake 100m deep and 400m wide that was created after an underground test with an atomic bomb in 1965. The lake shore is still radioactively contaminated after 60 years. From 1949 until 1991 the Soviet government conducted 456 nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk Test Site, also known as the 'Polygon' which measured 19,000 square kms.
