Kinshasa, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

Mass in the church run by the renowned priest Bodo in the Kingabwa district, which specialises in healing witches, particularly children. The hype over child witches is out of control in the city: a series of innocuous events in a family home, such as a broken-down fridge, can result in one of the children being castigated as an evil influence. Religion is a flourishing business in poverty-ridden Kinshasa. Over 2000 Pentecostal churches have sprung up over the last few years, promising miracles but delivering little to alleviate the hopelessness of the worshippers. Some of the charismatic preachers, however, have amassed huge personal fortunes. Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire).
