Mazaj (32) one of ten Pakistanti boat builders constructing a traditional wooden Iranian Lenj boat in the Gouran boatyard. The workers who will be paid a thousand US Dollars a year for two years, all the while while living in very basic conditions. The tropical teak wood the boat is made from is imported from Burma, India and Africa. To buy such a boat would cost around 350,000 USD.Gouran is the last shipyard where they still make and maintain traditional Lenj boats from wood. Typically they are now made from fibreglass. They are built to carry cargo, sailing the Persian Gulf, trading between Iran, Oman and Dubai. They carry fruits and vegetables, fish, electonics, textiles, livestock and sometimes for smuggling.In 2011 Lenj boat building was listed by UNESCO as an endangered cultural heritage.
