Mr Kua, who is the only Chinese memorial mason making Islamic headstones in Malaysia, works beneath a rough shelter at his workshop in the grounds of a now abandoned courthouse. Now 60 he started work at the age of sixteen, following in his father’s footsteps. Today he is the only person working in this sheltered spot tucked away from the main road. He is fluent in Jawi, a traditional Malay script, based on Arabic, but not commonly used by Malaysians. He now holds the unique position of being the only memorial mason left in the country making gravestones in granite for Muslims.
