Lake Victoria, Uganda

On the deck of the MV Kalangala, dozens of passengers are crammed on either side of the vehicles, under a blazing sun, for the three hour crossing between Entebbe and the Ssese archipelago. Many ferries, fishing boats and other vessels, often dilapidated or poorly maintained, criss cross the lake every day, connecting the main ports and the islands. The authorities have little regard for security or for the often incomplete passenger registers. Accidents often result in very heavy casualties, due to the absence of life jackets and the fact that a large proportion of the population cannot swim.
