People at work in a legal office in Klang. Malaysia's racially-mixed society is often seen as a model of multiculturalism and in a typical office people of different races work side by side, apparently indifferent to the deep racial divisions that many believe lie beneath the surface. Such divisions, where they do exist, mirror the political makeup of the country. Since independence, the ruling party has remained a coalition of three communal parties, each representing a specific ethnic community and often focussed on meeting the essentially parochial demands of their constituents.
