People gather for a vigil at a memorial of flowers left at the bandstand on Clapham Common, close to where Sarah Everard, a 33 year old woman, was abducted in March 2021. Following the discovery of Sarah Everard's body in Kent, the area around the bandstand became a memorial and nationwide there were demands for an end to violence against women and girls. An off-duty police officer, Wayne Couzens, was arrested and eventually confessed to the abduction, rape and murder of Everard. Her death has brought about a wave of demonstrations and discussion of a change in attitudes to and violence against women. The police, citing COVID-19 restrictions, later tried to disperse the crowd but were heavily criticized for their heavy-handed tactics.
