Nyani Quarmyne

Nyankpala, Northern Region, Ghana

Prayer beads in the hands of Afa Dauda, a traditional healer, in Nyankpal. In Ghana, mental illness is typically seen as having a spiritual cause, and so for many traditional or faith healers are often the first point of call. In a country of 24 million, Ghana has only 12 public psychiatrists, but approximately 45 000 traditional healers.
