Rosina (4 months) sleeps in the UNICEF creche at the Ebola Treatment Centre in Butembo. Her mother is in seriously unwell with Ebola although Rosina has not tested positive for the disease.
An Ebola outbreak was declared on 7 February 2021 in Butembo less than a year after a previous Ebola outbreak was declared over in June 2020. It had claimed the lives of 2,287 people since August 2018.
The second outbreak appeared to be under control, partly as a result of the swift deployment of the Ebola vaccine, although there is still resistance to being inoculated in some areas.
