Lunda Norte, ANGOLA

Security guard at an official diamond mine, operated on behalf of the government by a Brazilian company called Oderbrecht. The area where the diamonds are sorted is under constant armed guard. Angola is the world's fourth largest diamond producer, generating $650m a year, although illegal mining and smuggling significantly distort the figures. With the country embroiled in civil war for almost the entire period since independence in 1975, much of the diamond production has been in the hands of the UNITA rebels.
